Defamation of character?

my former landlord tried having my wife fired from her work by calling and saying that my wife threatened her with bodily harm while calling from the work phone, it was recorded for quality, so we have what my wife said to the ex-landlord and also everything that the L.L was accuseing my wife of doing/saying. do i have a case to sue??
